Reading for Life, Learning and Opportunity
At Thomas Telford UTC, we believe that reading is central to every student’s education and plays a vital role in preparing young people for future study, employment, and life beyond school. Our aim is to develop confident, independent readers who are able to access, understand, question, and engage with a wide range of texts.
We recognise that students arrive with different reading experiences, levels of confidence, and individual needs. Our approach therefore focuses on building strong foundations while providing appropriate challenge and support so that all students can make meaningful progress. Through regular opportunities to read, discuss, analyse, and respond to texts, students develop the vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and critical-thinking skills required to become successful learners across all areas of the curriculum.
We seek to establish a strong culture of reading throughout the school, where students are encouraged to read widely and discover the enjoyment and value that reading can bring. Students will encounter a diverse range of texts that broaden their knowledge, introduce them to different perspectives, and encourage curiosity about the world around them.
By working in partnership with students, parents/carers, staff, and the wider school community, we aim to remove barriers to reading and ensure that every young person is equipped with the literacy skills, confidence, and resilience to fulfil their potential.
Reading gives students access to knowledge, opportunity, and a wider world. Our ambition is for every student to have the confidence and ability to unlock those opportunities.
